Drapers Top 100 2017 - 90: Raf Simons, chief creative officer, Calvin Klein

Following his four-year stint as creative director for womenswear at Dior, Belgian designer Raf Simons showed his first collection as creative director of Calvin Klein in February this year, rebooting the brand’s aesthetic with his minimalist take on Americana.

With Simons’ reinvention of the label, Calvin Klein immediately shot to the top of buyers’ wish lists across the luxury sector. The show was cited as a seasonal highlight thanks to its versatility and fresh attitude.

Simons’ second collection, shown in September, inspired similar rave reviews.

His slick aesthetic has already started to trickle down to high street styles – menswear collections have been referencing the Western look favoured by Simons in his creations so far. Following his lead, buttoned-up shirts and denim jackets have a rigid feel this season, and clashing colours are popular. As he establishes his imprint on the label, the Simons effect looks set to tighten its grip on the high street.
