Drapers 30 Under 30 2020: Lucy Evans, digital merchandiser, Warehouse

Age: 28

Mary Anderson-Ford, managing director of recruitment agency Aqua Retail, first met Lucy Evans when she was fresh from graduating from the University of Leeds in 2014.

“From the moment I met Lucy, I was blown away by her,” Anderson-Ford tells Drapers. “I saw star quality immediately. Lucy’s blend of commerciality and personality put her head and shoulders above her peers.”

Evans started her career at Mint Velvet, where she worked her way from merchandising administration assistant to junior digital merchandiser. Last year, she made the jump to her current role as digital merchandiser at Warehouse.

“When I graduated from university with a degree in mathematics, I had absolutely no idea what I wanted to do as a career,” Evans says. “I knew I wanted to work with numbers, solve problems and work within a dynamic team. I just didn’t know how that fitted into the fashion industry, which I’d always been interested in. After a few weeks of soul searching – and literally typing ‘fashion and numbers’ into a search engine – I came upon merchandising.”

She tells other young people starting out in the fashion industry: “You don’t – and won’t ever – know all the answers. At school and university – especially when you’re studying mathematics – you’re taught that there’s a right answer for every question. In reality, this often isn’t the case. It’s integral to nurture an instinct for what will work best for the company in the short, medium and long term based on the information you have in front of you.”
