Drapers 30 Under 30 2020: Matty Bovan, founder and designer, Matty Bovan

Age: 29

Known for his avant-garde maximalism, designer Matty Bovan grew up in York, where he is still based. Sculptural knits, contrasting textures and intricate embellishments feature heavily throughout his collections, which have earned the emerging designer numerous accolades.

He graduated from Central Saint Martins in 2015 with an MA in fashion knitwear, and was awarded the L’Oreal Professionnel Creative Award for his final collection. That same year, he won the prestigious LVMH Graduate Prize, for which he received €10,000 (£8,500) and a year’s placement as a junior designer at Louis Vuitton under Nicholas Ghesquière.

Bovan is also a recipient of the British Fashion Council’s Newgen bursary, which will support his spring and autumn 20 catwalk shows, and was shortlisted for the British Emerging Talent Womenswear award at the Fashion Awards 2019.

His eponymous brand is stocked by Matchesfashion and Milan’s No30. Bovan has collaborated with US brand Coach on a range of accessories since 2016, as well as partnering with Miu Miu, cosmetics brand Mac and toy brand Barbie on a variety of projects, including a series of one-off dolls dressed in his pieces.

Famous faces spotted wearing his clothing include models Adwoa Aboah and Daisy Lowe, and singers Rita Ora and Björk.
