Fleur East, singer and former star of ITV’s The X Factor, tells Drapers about her first range for Lipsy.
Joining the likes of the Kardashian sisters and former Coronation Street actress Michelle Keegan, The X Factor star Fleur East is the latest celebrity tie-up for young fashion brand Lipsy. Her autumn 15 range features an edgier style for the label with leather-look jackets, fake fur-lined coats and daring thigh-length splits on dresses.
Retail prices range from £28 for a ribbed cowl neck top to £115 for a bonded biker coat.
Why did you originally decide to work with Lipsy?.
I have always been a big fan of Lipsy. It has the best party dresses and I love fashion and dressing up. So, when the opportunity came along, I jumped at the chance.
How involved were you in designing the range?
I was very hands-on when it came to designing the range, from mood boards to samples to deciding on the final product. I loved it. It’s very different from anything Lipsy has done before; it’s a lot edgier than what it usually does.
What are your favourite pieces from the autumn 15 range?
My favourite piece is a camel coat. It’s a great caramel colour and it has a detachable fake fur collar so you can dress it up or down.
What was your inspiration?
The range is based on my own style; I wanted it to reflect the clothes that I would wear.
Other than Lipsy, what are your favourite brands? Are you a high street or a high-end girl?
I like to mix things up. I might wear an expensive pair of trainers, but I’ll team them with jeans from Topshop or a jacket from Zara.
Who would you like to see wearing your range?
I would love to see Rihanna in my designs, or Kim Kardashian, of course. The Kardashians have designed a line for Lipsy in the past, so now I’m following in their footsteps it would be pretty cool for them to wear my collection.
Who is your style icon?
It’s a mix of four people, really: singers Rihanna, Beyoncé and Ciara, and reality star Kim Kardashian.
What was your favourite stage outfit during The X Factor?
Being on stage really gives you a chance to experiment with themes. I loved my week two outfit. It was a 1970s theme, so I wore a vintage Chanel jacket and a pair of disco hot pants – it was great!
You wear lots of glamorous pieces on stage. Is your off-duty style as dressy, or do you like to dress down?
My everyday style is a bit more relaxed but I love bright colours, so I’ll mix it up with a pair of gold trainers and I love a red dress.
Which X Factor judge has the best sense of style?
That’s a hard one. I love Cheryl’s style; the girls really killed it this year. The X Factor ladies are doing very well.
The Fleur East by Lipsy collection launches online and in stores on September 22.
