Adrian Mountford

Director of general merchandise, Sainsbury’s

Testament to Adrian Mountford’s influence at Sainsbury’s Tu clothing business was his promotion a few months ago to oversee the supermarket chain’s entire general merchandise offer.

Under Mountford’s tenure as director of clothing, Tu’s sales increased fivefold over four years, and the collection celebrated its fifth birthday in 2009. He believes Tu can reach sales of £1bn, up from £500m at present, and it notched up an increase of 40% on schoolwear sales after joining in the hotly contested school uniform price battle this summer.

In November, Sainsbury’s said that non-food sales, which include fashion, grew at two-and-a-half times the rate of food sales in the 28 weeks to October 23. During the first half, Sainsbury’s Tu recorded a million transactions in one week for the first time since its launch five years ago.

Mountford has passed the clothing mantle on to Sara Bradley, whom he poached from George at Asda in 2008.
