“[This year] more businesses will realise that in the long term discounting is a zero sum game. Customers expect year-round quality, style and real value for money. Not stunts. I’m more optimistic about 2013 than I was this time last year, but economic recovery is still very fragile. Expansion
lies with online and with the innovators. There is still growth opportunity for those who really listen to their customers and focus on quality and value. However, there will be further casualties. I think the market continues to polarise between the winners and the losers.”
