John King

Chief executive, House of Fraser

After a year of high-profile store openings in 2008, House of Fraser chief executive John King has spent much of this year behind the scenes negotiating deals with exclusive labels.

Attracting brands such as Ralph Lauren’s womenswear label Lauren, acquiring iconic British label Biba and launching clothing ranges from the likes of Pied a Terre has ensured that House of Fraser has kept moving on a margin-boosting own-label strategy during what has been a difficult year for the department store chain following the collapse of investor Baugur. King has lured in womenswear veteran Stephanie Chen to drive the strategy.

Former Matalan boss King is also a staunch supporter of young talent and developing skills in the retail industry, most recently committing to provide work experience for all Diploma in Retail Business students from September next year.
