Julia Ewald

Senior manager, eBay Fashion Outlet

What does your job involve?

I’m directly responsible for the UK and German Fashion Outlet at [online auction site] eBay. This is a new area where consumers can buy clothes direct from brands they love at discounted prices.

What skills do you need?

Managing the eBay Fashion Outlet is not a one-woman show. There are several teams working tirelessly on its success, including marketing, PR, business development and technical development, to name just a few.

As the overall lead I need to be a very good project manager and communicator, building strong relationships inside and outside the company. Multi-tasking and prioritising initiatives that will deliver the best results are also key.

What do you like and dislike about your job?

eBay is an amazing place to work as it’s full of bright and positive people. You feel this incredible energy all around you. The job is really challenging but people are very friendly and there is a strong concept of empowerment. I love how international eBay is. The only slight downside of the multicultural teams is that some evenings are spent on international calls due to the different time zones.

How did you get to where you are today?

Before eBay I worked as ecommerce director at Boutique 1, a multi-brand retailer in Dubai, which sells more than 300 brands.

I joined to start its online shop from scratch - a great entrepreneurial experience. Before moving to Dubai I was managing director for, a German online retailer of premium womenswear. But before my life in fashion I worked at the European Aeronautics Defence and Space Agency. That was a great way to learn the ropes in multicultural projects and process management but I had to follow my heart and switch to fashion. So I did a second degree in fashion design, which allowed me to understand the business side of fashion as well as the design process.

What is your proudest career achievement to date?

Launching in Dubai was exciting. It meant building an online business from scratch as well as a team of 26 people, and creating and managing a brand portfolio targeted at the Middle Eastern market. Building a photo studio in the desert was an experience in itself.

What is your ambition?

To make the eBay Fashion Outlet the biggest online outlet mall there is.

How do you intend to get there?

By working very closely with the various teams supporting the outlet. This is a true team effort.

What three words sum you up?

Energetic, passionate and international.

What advice would you give to someone wanting to follow in your footsteps?

Choose a job you are passionate about. Be curious and willing to learn every day. Also, be nice and friendly - after all, we all want to have fun in what we do.
