03 Paul Marchant

Chief executive, Primark

With a clenched fist raised high above his head at the Drapers Fashion Awards last month, Paul Marchant was clearly one happy bunny. And so he should be, having taken home the Best Value Retailer accolade. Although profits fell at the retailer by 8% for the year, they did so because Marchant refused to pass on rising costs to the consumer, maintaining Primark’s competitive price advantage. Revenue and like-for-likes remained on the up. But in 2011, Marchant will be remembered for one thing above all others: Primark’s opening of menswear concessions in Selfridges, one of the biggest shock stories of the year.
