11 Don McCarthy & John King

Chairman and chief executive, House of Fraser

Don McCarthy (below left) and John King grabbed the headlines this year for their visionary ‘stockless’ retail concept, an approach more in line with tech pioneer Apple. Based entirely on click-and-collect, the concept was installed in two House of Fraser stores, in Liverpool and Aberdeen, which opened in October. Shoppers are greeted with an array of gadgets to create a convenient shopping experience, with brand experience and immersion at its heart, setting the tone for a seamless multichannel operation. King also led a tie-up with Mary Portas, whose shop in the Oxford Street branch is rumoured to be exceeding sales expectations. Full-year profits soared 44% to £85.7m and like-for-likes grew 4.1%.
