Owner, Arcadia Group
One of the most talked about men in fashion, Sir Philip Green is rarely out of the national headlines. And last month was no exception, as Arcadia’s pre-tax profit slumped £80.1m to £133.1m, while margin declined 1.8% – equivalent to £52.4m – as the retailer absorbed costs rather than pass them on to the consumer. Green has warned of the potential closure of hundreds of stores in the next few years, but held up Topman, Topshop and Miss Selfridge as examples of strong businesses. No mention of Bhs, Burton and Dorothy Perkins, though… On the flip side, Green is a philanthropic supporter of new talent, launching the Retail Academy to home grow his retail stars.
What he says… “Flat is the new growth.”
