Such is the respect that Uniqlo garners from its peers that one rival director called it “the best retailer on the UK high street”. Given that, according to the most recently reported figures, the UK arm is still making a loss – £700,000 for the year to August 2010 against £5.3m the previous year – the reason for this praise is largely down to the product. Step forward Yuki Katsuta, who continues to drive what is arguably the best basics offering on the high street, with a level of quality that belies the low prices. For real UK domination, Uniqlo needs to expand beyond London and the M25.

This year’s high… Katsuta persuaded the likes of pop star Lady Gaga, designer Karl Lagerfeld and actress Gwyneth Paltrow to design limited-edition T-shirts in support of the relief effort following the Japanese earthquakes.
