Managing director, Selfridges
In January, the first lady of UK luxury department stores, Anne Pitcher, was promoted from Selfridges’ buying and merchandising director to managing director of the department store chain. She took over the reins from chief executive Paul Kelly, now managing director of Selfridges Group. Profits of £127m and an 11% increase in sales across Manchester, London and Birmingham to £950m for the year to January, 2011 suggest Kelly handed the business over in good shape. But Pitcher, the self-professed shoe obsessive, has already made waves, increasing the customer base by launching a menswear collaboration with Primark in its Birmingham and Trafford Centre stores. At the other end of the scale, numerous department revamps have kept the luxury retailer at the top of its game.
