35 Ray Kelvin

Founder and chief executive, Ted Baker

Camera-shy and a fan of a big hug, Ray Kelvin received the recognition he deserved this year, collecting a CBE for services to the fashion industry in June. His prospering Ted Baker business reported a 12.7% rise in pre-tax profits to £8.5m for the 28 weeks to August 13, while wholesale sales soared 32.8% as stockists noted customers’ preference for trusted brands in uncertain times. With stores that are the envy of the industry, Kelvin continued to innovate, launching a mouth-watering Sweet Shoppe in Selfridges, featuring candy-coloured accessories, and his Tedbury store in Bluewater, based on a fictional Kent village. A click-and-collect service shows he’s not all about bricks-and-mortar.
