37 Philip Day ***New***

Group chairman and chief executive, Edinburgh Woollen Mill

Commonly accepted as one of this year’s more unusual retail takeovers, the acquisition of young fashion chain Jane Norman by Edinburgh Woollen Mill, purveyor of fleeces for the over-50s, definitely raised a few eyebrows. But its under-the-radar chief executive, multimillionaire Philip Day, has a knack for integrating struggling businesses. Since acquiring the beleaguered retailer in June, Day has said he wants to add between 50 and 75 stores over the next 15 months to the 63 he has retained. He also wants to expand Jane Norman internationally and is examining potential new markets in Asia.

Did you know… Philip Day’s daughter Kirstie was a finalist in the 2010 Miss England competition.
