The brilliantly eccentric Tom Chapman is a new entry to the Power List, crashing in at number 60. Presiding over one of the stalwarts of indie retailing, Chapman took his 14-store (including Diane von Furstenberg and MaxMara franchise stores) empire to new heights this year. He opened a private shopping division called Matches No 23 to give customers a more personalised experience, and invested in the online business by acquiring a new platform to transform the Matches website, which already makes up 40% of total sales. Chapman looks set to continue to be the indie operator to watch in 2012, in both etail and bricks-and-mortar.
