Harrods’ ownership may have changed hands from Mohamed Al Fayed to the Qatari royal family last year, but Michael Ward has remained, steering the store through the £1bn sales barrier. He has been ahead of the curve in recognising the growing importance of the Chinese consumer, introducing China UnionPay credit and debit card terminals. He also seemed pretty chuffed to collect a Drapers Fashion Award for Best Department Store this year.

What he says… Describes former boss Al Fayed as a “difficult bugger”, but says their relationship was full of banter.
