Design director for F&F Europe, Tesco
The success of last year, with clothing sales hitting £1bn for the first time, no doubt helped propel Tesco buying director for clothing Jan Marchant to greater heights – this year she’s taken on a European role as design director for F&F Europe. While Tesco’s kidswear product development – working directly with parents on items such as its back-to-school clothing bundle and pre-pubescent £5 bras – has done much to cement the retailer’s family positioning. The real task ahead for Marchant is to boost its fashion credentials – in April, chief executive Philip Clarke said Tesco’s clothing needed to be more on trend and UK general merchandise sales fell in the 26 weeks to August 27. Since then, we’ve seen the influence of Kate Middleton on its womenswear, prompting the launch of pieces including an interpretation of the Reiss Shola dress and the F&F limited edition bandage-style dress – both sold out at an affordable £30.
