Top 100: 17. Barry Bown

Chief executive, JD Sports Fashion

The influential nature of sportswear giant JD Sports Fashion can’t be denied, with its constant acquisitions across the breadth of the fashion industry. Spearheaded by trainers aficionado Barry Bown (a more popular industry figure than rival Mike Ashley), JD has snapped up brands including One True Saxon, Fly53 and Nickelson, plus retailers such as outdoor chain Blacks Leisure, Northwest indie mini-chain Originals Clothing and a share in menswear indie Tessuti. The retailer continues to set the pace and has opened a new JD Pro fascia in the City to appeal to wealthy sports enthusiasts, which could be seen as an attempt to prevent Sports Direct from mopping up the sports goods market.

This year’s low… Profit before tax fell from £20.1m to £2.9m in the 26 weeks to July 28, largely as a result of a £10m loss at Blacks.
