Top 100: 26. Michael Ward & Marigay McKee

Managing director and chief merchant, Harrods

Luxury department stores have boomed as tourists from China and the Middle East keep London from sharing the economic woes of the rest of the UK, but Harrods remains at the top of its game. Michael Ward, who this year joined the board of luxury trade body Walpole, has been described by one colleague as “a genius” while Marigay McKee has huge flair for product blends - the perfect pair. Bricks-and-mortar remains essential, but Harrods is also paving the way for the kidswear e-revolution by introducing a ‘virtual’ boutique in which kids can dress their avatar in the likes of Sonia Rykiel and Chloé. With Harrods tipped for even greater things, rivals are keeping tabs on the pair in the hope some of the glitter will rub off.
