Top 100: 58. Rei Kawakubo

Founder, Dover Street Market

Comme des Garçons designer Rei Kawakubo’s London store Dover Street Market continues to lead the way in terms of inspiring independent retail, standing out as one of, if not the, coolest shopping destination in the city. Part designer store, part art exhibition, the six-floor space is as innovative as it is inspiring in terms of store design and brand mix, featuring a heavy dose of rising stars including J JS Lee, Simone Rocha and Qasimi Homme, alongside big names such as Céline, Alexander McQueen and Jil Sander. International expansion saw Kawakubo open an arm of Dover Street Market in Ginza, Tokyo, in March, while this year’s Tachiagari, or biannual store revamp, was another example of the store’s market-leading creative merchandising and design.
