Top 100: 70. John Dixon & Belinda Earl

Executive director of general merchandise; style director, Marks & Spencer

As the two recently appointed figures most responsible for the fashion product, Dixon and Earl have a real task on their hands at M&S. Looking at recent results, the UK institution’s sales have picked up in the second quarter compared with the first but it will take every minute of Earl’s three days a week to turn around the womenswear product, especially considering Dixon’s lack of fashion background. The pair were only installed in September but if the spring 13 preview is anything to go by, there are green shoots of recovery among the floral, metallic and minimal themes.

What they say about Earl… “She’s very hands-on and diligent,” says Sir Stuart Rose.
