Anders Holch Povlsen, owner and CEO, Bestseller Group

Danish billionaire and retail titan Anders Holch Povlsen took over the running of his family-owned business in 2000, aged just 28.

Today, Bestseller has offices in 22 countries, sells in 70 markets, has 2,700 owned and franchise stores, 15,000 stockists, and more than 15,000 employees.

Net turnover rose 3.3% to €3.3bn (£2.9bn) in 2017/18, boosted by womenswear, while pre-tax profit rose 14.9% year on year to €387m (£343m). Povlsen plans to open 250 stores globally in 2018/19, and this month Bestseller unveiled a new sustainability strategy.

Of its 26 brands, 17 are available in the UK – among them Jack & Jones, Vero Moda and Selected – and it has 380 wholesale accounts.

Povlsen’s influence extends beyond Bestseller. He sold 2 million Asos shares this year, but Bestseller remains its biggest shareholder with 26.7%. He owns a 10% of Zalando and invested in payment provider Klarna.
