Drapers 30 Under 30 2020: Sally Minns, head of creative content, Master Debonair

Age: 27

Another leading light in the independent sector, Master Debonair’s Sally Minns is already celebrating after picking up the award for Rising Star at September’s Drapers Independents Awards.

Eve Whitaker, co-founder of the north-east menswear indpendentr, tells Drapers: “Sally has been instrumental in the growth and success of Master Debonair over the last 18 months. Sally is the lead within our creative department, which she set up from scratch. She is directly responsible for the creation of our photography and merchandising, and also plays a key role in our buying strategy. She lives and breathes her work.”

Minns joined Master Debonair in 2017 from her previous role as a freelance stylist, and quickly embedded herself across multiple areas of the business.

Passionate about giving young people from her native north-east of England experience working in the often London-focused fashion industry, Minns has also worked with local universities to create placement schemes at Master Debonair. Four students have undertaken the placement to date, two of whom have graduated and gone on to secure jobs in fashion.

She also encourages students to shadow her during shoots and last year worked with local secondary school Whitburn Church of England Academy to create a student fashion show.

Minns’ best career lesson is simple but effective: “My dad always says, ‘Shy bairns get nowt.’ No truer words have been spoken. There is no time to sit and wait for opportunities to come your way – you have to go out and get them. Prove your worth and the rest will follow.”
