Drapers 30 Under 30 2020: Thomas May, head of product growth, Thread

Age: 30

Driving conversion rates, developing new processes and encouraging a spirit of collaboration are all in a day’s work for Thomas May, head of product growth at menswear styling service Thread.

He started at business as product manager in 2016 and, despite having little previous experience in the role, quickly proved his worth. His achievements include developing a new process called “Test and Delivery”, which helps Thread to test and implement new features more effectively.

As a result of his rapid development and substantial impact on the business, May was quickly promoted to a leadership position, head of product growth, early last year.

“He is both extremely user focused and deeply analytical – able to spend a morning drawing out nuanced insights from qualitative research, and then an afternoon doing advanced data analysis,” says Kieran O’Neill, CEO and co-founder of Thread. “He’s candid, speaks the hard truths that need to be said, is a natural leader, and well liked by his colleagues.”

May says: “Most recently, I’m proud of the work I’ve been doing at Thread to create and develop the product growth function. In particular, this has involved working out how the product and marketing teams can collaborate most effectively. This is a work in progress, but we’ve had some early successes, which have proven the value of closely aligning the two teams’ objectives and plans.”
