Young talent gives us confidence in 2011

Stephen Selby, Success Appointments

Success Appointments is delighted to be sponsoring Drapers Next Generation for the second year. We gained a huge amount from last year’s programme. The motivation and enthusiasm of the young attendees was an inspiration, and gave us confidence in the future of our industry.

It is interesting to note the change in the economic climate compared with this time last year. We have seen a marked increase in confidence and investment during 2010. The fact that employers are now seeking both youth, and a mix of experience in their people, reflects the improvement in the business climate. The question remains as to how permanent this will be as we enter 2011.

We will soon see, as the VAT increase, rising raw material costs and cuts take effect.

The modern elements of our industry such as ecommerce, product design and sourcing call for that youthful eye and vision.

However, the industry still lacks “on the job” training schemes for young talent. These can be set up at little cost and the benefits always outweigh the commitment needed to establish them. We call on employers to run in-house training and development programmes wherever practical. It will bring untold benefits to your own businesses, the industry, and the economy.
