Portas pilots competition launched

Mary Portas and local government minister Grant Shapps have launched a competition to pick 12 towns to become blueprints for the recommendations outlined in her December Review.

The 12 towns will share in £1m pot to help them implement changes and turnaround their high streets.

Shapps said: “Today I’m offering a golden ticket to 12 town centres across the country to become ‘Portas Pilots’ - areas with the vision and enthusiasm to breathe new life into what should be the beating heart of their communities.”

The successful towns will create a town team - one of the key recommendations in Portas’ Review - and will be encouraged to be creative, defining roles and giving communities a greater say.

Bids will need to demonstrate commitment to the town team approach, a good geographical spread and town mix as well as potential for improvement.

The prospectus can be downloaded from the link to the right.

The closing date for entries is March 30.
