Price inflation remains at 1.8% in July

The Consumer Prices Index (CPI) inflation rate remained unchanged at 1.8% in July, confounding expectations that there would be another fall.

The Retail Prices Index (RPI) inflation rate fell 1.4% compared to the 1.6% decline in June, the Office for National Statistics reported.

During the month of July, the average price of clothing and footwear fell by 3.2% month-on-month and fell by 8.1% on the year and this had a downward pull of 0.5% on the topline rate.

Food and non-alcoholic drinks exerted the strongest downward pressure on the CPI.

The Consumer Price Index is a measure estimating the average price of consumer goods and services purchased by households.
