Primark has signed to move into Lancaster’s Marketgate Shopping Centre, in a deal that makes it the affluent Northwest university town’s largest retailer by floor space.
Planning permission has already been granted for the reconfiguration of the centre’s old market hall into a 50,000 sq ft store. Building work could start as early as Easter this year, and hand over to Primark is scheduled for early 2015.
Allied (Lancaster) Limited, the owner of Marketgate Shopping Centre since January 2008, announced the deal today. Primark now operate 162 stores in the UK alone.
The enlarged site, which includes building over Gillison’s Lane, also encompass a number of the units currently facing the market hall to create an extended building with a frontage onto Marketgate/Cornmarket.
An Allied spokesman said: “The new 50,000 sq ft store will dramatically improve the retail landscape in Lancaster city centre.”
