Chanel

Autumn 12

Karl Lagerfeld likes to take us on a journey. For spring 12 we went to the ocean depths, pre-fall we were Bombay-bound and then took a trip on Chanel Airlines for couture. This season he took us on a journey to the centre of the earth to a world of crystalline stalagmites and glittering rock formations. This was encapsulated on signature tailoring studded with crystals, mineral-like sequins, glistening metallic tweeds and feathers gathered like gem clusters. The standout look was a reworking of the three-piece suit, coming as blazers, trousers and skirts, although we’re unsure of the wider appeal of this kind of layering. Elsewhere there were new geometric-pattern knits and sporty jackets featuring drawstring waists and large 3D patch pockets, both of which are likely to be more commercial.
