Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana showed a parade of baroque duchesses decked out in opulent black, white and gold, lots and lots of gold. There were lavish metallic embellishments, embroideries and pearls encrusted on hems, waists and necklines alongside needlepoint florals, tapestry-style cherubs and a raft of leopard print. There was also a religious overtone, with Victoriana veils, cloak capes and virginal lace alongside demure dresses and skirts that fell just below the knee. The cape, which was central to the pair’s earlier menswear show, came in dainty cropped options or flowing knee or full-length styles. But this was Milan, the sexiest of fashion weeks, and this was Dolce & Gabbana, one of its raunchier labels, so of course there was that naughty Milanese wink, with sheer fabrics, see-through lace and knicker shorts.
