London Fashion Week preview: Richard Nicoll

Fabrics won’t be what they seem and classics will be given a twist, says Nicoll.

What are your inspirations for autumn 13?

Menswear, ‘the special normal’, authenticity, elegance, charm, timelessness and ‘the new classic’. It’s a sensitively minimal collection of staple wardrobe hits. The winter collection is more classic and grown-up in a way but still with a young spirit. Classicism with a rebellious spirit.

What are the key items?

Everything is key in this collection.

And your key colours and fabrics?

The fabric brief to myself was ‘Fabrics In Disguise’, so fabrics that imitate other fabrics and colours are muted and bright. Everything is key in a way because the collection is a balanced composition of all of the elements combined; I approached it as a collage.

What’s it been like creating this collection?

It’s been a pleasure, if a little rushed. The men’s collection gave me a strong starting point and focus.
