New York Fashion Week: Ralph Lauren

The sun-kissed Mr Lauren is never afraid of giving his collections a European vibe, but where historically he’s referenced our fair isle, it seems while contemplating spring 13 he was topping up his tan further south.

Geographically speaking the show would be most at home in the Pyrenees – that is, somewhere between France and Spain – but this was no après-ski affair as the fire of the flamenco dresses and blasé berets were honest recreations of their countries’ signatures. Matadors mixed it with mademoiselles in a bold move away from Ralph’s Downton Abbey comfort zone.

In short Jauntily slanted hats aside, the fluid dresses, occasional flirty blouse and in particular the trousers are all strong commercial pieces. Olé!
