New York Fashion Week: Ralph Lauren

Yes, fashion is constantly referring to the past to create something new, but at what point does ‘inspired by’ become ‘costumey’?

Well, at Ralph Lauren’s latest show we might have just found out. Always dancing the line between homage and pastiche, Lauren’s signature can baffle and delight in equal measure and for autumn 13 he fell just the right side. Just. Strip back the slightly dodgy headwear, frilly bibs and OTT belts and there were good individual pieces: cute simple knits, a charming nautical jacket, knee-length velvet dresses and some super black trousers were all in there somewhere.

In short All the styling aside, there were some strong, commercial separates; it’s just a shame it was so hard to see them.
