On trend

David Cullen
Owner of menswear store Roulette Clothing in st helier, Jersey

Our customers are seeking a cleaner look and a slimmer shape. The tapered fit works across the board, particularly with brands such as Nudie and Edwin. True Religion and Denham sales were strong [for autumn 14], especially stretch washes.

Rick Gaglio
Managing director of indie Twisted Fabric in Hitchin, hertfordshire

I’ve told denim brands for years to drop skinny jeans and introduce slim tapered denim. Lo and behold - they realise it’s the bestselling fit in the country and start making it in all washes. Clean, affordable denim under £100 is doing well.

Debra McCann
Director of womenswear store The Mercantile London in spitalfields

Clean is the main focus, mainly in core colours and a good selection of different wash finishes. Our customer is quite knowledgeable and unwilling to pay high prices. In terms of cuts, high-rise skinny or slim is our bestseller. We never sell bootleg or embellished and rarely sell straight.

Terry Bates
Founder of denim brand Denim Is Everything

More innovative buyers are looking for newness and taking into consideration price, brand, margin, fabric, fit and wash. Very few brands can deliver denim that competes on each of those variables.

Nigel Addison
Managing director of young fashion brand Duck and Cover

Every customer wants a slimmer, tailored look. As a result we’ve engineered all our fits to suit this trend, so even men with large thighs can buy into it. An interesting shift is the move towards stretch denims; most of our buyers are flipping to them.

Alessandro Vigano
Creative director of denim brand Energie

Thanks to fabric innovations, tastes are diversifying. The majority of our sales come from the refined slim and skinny fits. We always mix things up, combining tailoring details with ripped vintage looks.
