Exclusive: Indian investor buys Rampant Sporting

Young fashion brand Rampant Sporting will focus on international and online expansion after an investor took a majority stake in the business.

Indian clothing firm Batra Group acquired an undisclosed holding in the company, although its former owner, lifestyle retailer Joules, will retain an interest in the business.

The brand has also received investment from Encore Capital Group. However, founder Richard Hurtley will remain as managing director.

Rampant Sporting now plans to secure its position in the UK market before heading overseas for spring 14.

Hurtley said: “With Joules still involved and the resources of Batra Group behind us, I feel we are in a really strong position.”

Rampant will close its two stores – in Exeter and Aldeburgh, Suffolk – to concentrate on wholesale and online.

Rampant Sporting was founded in 2007, and in 2010 an 80% stake in the brand was acquired by Joules. In August, Drapers broke the news that Joules was looking to sell its share in the brand in order to aid expansion.
