The collection The shapes at Gelco remain fairly classic for spring 11 but are modernised with details including sequin embellishment on the front of draped knitwear or painterly splashed prints on jersey tops.
Simple jackets have a lot more detail in the form of piping, visible stitching or animal-print trims. Loud prints provide strong statements on tops and jackets that are toned down when paired with plain fitted trousers or skirts. New shapes include a smock-style top, which is gathered under the bust, and a modern, panelled skirt with asymmetrical hem and loose ties. Gelco retains the tailoring dropped by some of the other mainstream brands but jacket shapes are softer and less structured and trousers are straight and fitted. Co-ordinating separates mean prints are carried through in vest and cardigan twin sets with matching skirts and jackets. Fuchsia, lilac and soft pinks complement a monochrome-based collection.

“We saw 36 customers in the first week [of selling] and every single one upped their order - by £1,000 here and £1,500 there. Buyers are demanding more detail now. They say customers don’t buy into basics any more - it needs that wow factor. I expect the stretch mesh pieces to sell well because they can take women from day to evening.”
