High street preview: River Island womenswear autumn 15

The 1960s and 1970s are the main inspirations at River Island, with classic retro items and a focus on fabric, texture and layering.

Various 1970s sub-trends appear, including a glam rock look for evening. There is a new focus on dressy jumpsuits, some with extra wide-legged flares and daring plunging necklines complete with tassels, ruffles and frills.

Other key 1970s items include button-through denim pencil skirts and flared jeans with statement fly buttons, a rust suede biker jacket with gold hardware, a pleather midi skirt and whipstitched details on miniskirts and tops. Fun retro graphics, boho-style Navajo geometrics, fake fur, shearling and snakeskin – in prints or embossed textures – all appear, while camel, rust and burgundy are the main colours.

Other key items include tailored culottes and a focus on sleeveless coats, which performed well last season and reappear in each of the retailer’s trend stories.
