Am Golhar

This men’s knitwear designer’s rare combination of innovation and commercial nous is wooing buyers.

Central. Saint. Martins. Three words that can set a young designer on course for big things and, judging by her autumn 11 menswear, there’s no reason to doubt the future’s bright for Am Golhar and her quality knitwear.

Having earned her spurs working on the catwalk jumpers for JW Anderson after she graduated, Golhar has applied her textile prowess and finely tuned sense of what men want from knitwear to create a collection that blends attributes all-too-often frustratingly difficult to combine effectively: creative innovation and commercial appeal.

Less than two years since going solo, Golhar’s careful building of her profile and attendance at both the Margin and Stitch shows has caught the attention of the industry’s more discerning eyes, most notably Asos, with whom she secured an exclusive deal for autumn 11.

“It was great – it was literally our first autumn selling season and they wanted the exclusive, so I thought ‘why not?’ We’ve had an amazing response.”

Working almost entirely in knitwear provides a challenge where spring collections are concerned, especially when a brand is so inextricably linked to a chunky, textural approach. Golhar’s unwavering focus on the brand’s values and aesthetic means she’s decided to skip spring 12 and go straight to autumn.

The range will include the bug motifs, knitted crew necks and joggers that are rapidly becoming signature styles, complemented by new pieces to keep things fresh. Golhar is tight-lipped about how those will shape up but we won’t have to wait long to find out, as autumn 12 buying starts in mid-December, with wholesale prices from £29 to £91.

What’s more, Golhar says she may have ‘something special’ for spring 13 and we can’t wait to see what.
