River Island: Womenswear

Autumn 10

The Look

Eclectic and varied with a selection of trend-led gems, River Island delivers a fun but mature range for autumn 10. Leather flying jackets jostle with silk blazers while its interpretation of the underwear as outerwear trend is a particular highlight. A drop-waisted dress with circular mesh disk detailing impresses, as does an ivory silk skirt with cut-out leaf detail.

Texture comes through on velvet pieces, and feathers which trim dresses or make up dress skirts. Corduroy is also a key fabric used in a Land Girl-type story while wide-leg corduroy mining trousers sit alongside heritage-print tea dresses. A folklore-inspired story also stands out, with rustic beading and intricate stitch details on knits styled under fur gilets.

Key pieces

  • Drop-waisted dress with feather trim
  • Corduroy trousers
  • Leather sheepskin-lined flying jacket

Right for the market?

Yes. The River Island customer demands that the retailer pushes the fashion boundaries with bright and at times outlandish styling, but also requires an element of femininity and sex appeal.

River Island delivers this for autumn 10 and although the pieces seen at the press preview won’t go into all the retailer’s stores, the key looks exhibited give a good taster of River Island’s confident attitude in terms of the season ahead. It ticks all the trend boxes but with a twist.
