Sainsbury's Tu

Spring 10

Looks

Much more youthful than its menswear counterpart Tu’s womenswear offer fell clearly into key categories. First, in a smoky palette of black and grey, was a sexy yet slouchy combination of skin-tight jeggings and stonewashed jeans, teamed with striped bodies and rivet-embellished long-line or cropped tops and one-button blazers in black and grey. Then, gently structured office-ready separates included bow-detail skirts and origami pleat tops with sheer blouses and tunics with pleated bibs softening the silhouette. An updated marriage of vintage and boho looks created a softer, prettier style that included chambray shirts dresses, realistic floral prints on tops, bodies and tiered skirts alongside lightweight cotton trousers with bow details. Apron dresses, smock tops and lace detailing added to the prairie feel. Finally bright apple green and lipstick red db coats added a zingy counterpart to the softer spring styles.

Key pieces

  • Chambray shirts dress
  • Bright green trench coat
  • Ditsy print tiered skirt
  • Stonewashed jeggings

Right for the market

Somewhat sexed-up, Tu’s press day offer looks more desirable than supermarket shoppers are used to. There are young looks here with the prairie-styling feeding off the workwear look that was so significant at streetwear show Bread & Butter while the sexy handwriting of the cigarette leg/slouchy top combo is not necessarily the easiest to wear. However, with plenty of office separates, casual tiered skirts, smock and shift dresses, there is plenty for most shoppers. With female customer becoming increasingly trend-literate, this collection looks like a shrewd combination of easy-to-wear and on-trend styles.
