Topshop

Spring 11

The look

Leather and distressed cotton biker jackets and US Stars and Stripes-print shorts ooze rock chick as Navajo-inspired-prints and fringing jostle with maxi dresses and printed T-shirts. A prim 1950s theme bubbles under the surface via sweet pussy-bow blouses with prints featuring cats and an autumnal, burnt orange A-line button-up skirt.

Topshop introduces some fresh takes on denim this season with peach acid-wash jeans printed with a unicorn design and featuring interesting metallic thread detail.

A cream cotton mac with black leather panels also stands out, and a playful take on the short dungaree works well in blue with lederhosen-style embroidery. Maxi and mid-length skirts also catch the eye.

Key pieces

  • Nautical striped over-the-knee pencil skirt
  • Cropped sleeveless blouse with mannish collar
  • Blue dungarees with lederhosen-inspired stitching
  • Grungy maxi skirt in crinkle cotton

Right for the market?

Sister chain Miss Selfridge has a clear vintage handwriting, so when vintage trends come to the fore, as for spring 11, Topshop must be careful not to muddy the waters between the two chains.

Fortunately, it has succeeded in keeping its own directional and rock-inspired aesthetic distinct and has nailed the trend for vintage shapes and colours.
