GDS autumn 09 Young Fashion

From premium labels to super brands, with comfort footwear sandwiched in between, German footwear fair GDS served up footwear for a variety of sectors and Drapers reports back on the best in show.

Rocket Dog

Brit-brand Rocket Dog has feminised key styles this season and put effort in to finishes and new winter looks. Boots channelled a moccasin inspired look but while boots comprise 50% of the collection on show, a wearable mid-height heeled style has been introduced into the formal line, while finishes from sequin to pink velvet on sneakers pop on the stand.

Prices £10 to £60

Dr Martens

Dr Martens has introduced a number of collaborative collections for autumn and has teamed up with the likes of Stussy and Yoji Yamamoto, further boosting the brands cool credibility. The collaborative ranges compliment the existing collection of mainstream styles featuring brogue details and the more far out range of quilted leather boots and tartan finishes. The price of product on show at GDS was higher than the cost of product in the UK.

Prices Euro 50 to 120

Levis

The Levis footwear collection has been scaled down by 20% for autumn 09 as the brand acknowledges it cannot compete with sneaker leaders and carves itself a market niche based on the brands heritage. New collaborations from Japan with gum soles and primary colour leather uppers meet a strong range of workwear inspired footwear featuring formal lace up styles in beaten and brushed suede and Chelsea boots.

Prices Euro 15 to 110

Sperry Topsiders

This brand has accomplished what eager buyers hoped it would and built on the recent, commercial success of its classic boat shoes style by building on it in a fashion-led way and forging collaborations with brands including Band of Outsiders.

For autumn Sperry has created a seasonal alternative to the spring sailing favourite by raising the profile of the shoe and designing a sailing shoe - sneaker hybrid.

Converse

American classic Converse has funked up its range for autumn. A series of workwear inspired ranges were on show at the brand’s vast GDS stand but it was the flannel lumberjack story which stood out. The typical rubber toe cap has been moved on via a contrast colour cap such as black cap on brown upper and a lightweight story has been introduced whereby the sole unit has been halved to create a more streamlined style.

Kickers

The autumn 09 range from Kickers appears to have been inspired by themes of nature and the outdoors, as brown, green and tan leathers on riding and moccasin style boots alongside creped soled brogues and chunky workwear boots combine to comprise a commercial collection. Cut leather flower badges adorn ankle boots and add a feminine twist to this otherwise functional yet fashionable range.
