Boots with hiking details and comfort technology dominated the mainstream footwear show.

Camel Active

Chunky outdoor soles are combined with fashion details on the uppers in both Camel Active’s men’s and women’s footwear for autumn 12. Key trends include the use of broguing, hiking details, contrasting fabrics and the Chelsea boot. The women’s offer in particular has become a lot more trend-led this season, with slightly higher heels on some styles.

Now in its fifth season in the UK, Softinos started as a basic comfortable trainer label aimed at yummy mummies but has expanded to include basketball-inspired hi-tops in a variety of colours including brown, black, red, off-white, blue, pink and green, in a very soft cashmere leather, washed leather and suede. The basic trainer shoe is also still available.

Originally a slippers brand, Baffies (Scottish slang for slippers) now includes a range of sheepskin boot styles for outdoors. Hoping to follow in the footsteps of more established sheepskin boot brands such as Emu Australia and Ugg, but with lower price points, Baffies is making its UK debut for autumn 12 following success in Europe.

Ethical brand Snipe has introduced heels on some of its women’s styles for the first time. While not particularly high, the styles are fairly trend-led with block-heel ankle boots in several styles and fabrics. Only chrome-free leather is used, which is more environmentally friendly, and all fastenings are nickel-free. In September, Snipe will launch a 100% compostable shoe.

Fly London

Some slightly dressier styles have been added to Fly London’s women’s range for autumn 12, including the Banshee, a wedge ankle boot in contrasting leather and suede that the brand says is already a best-seller. For men, the Chelsea boot is the major style, produced in glass leather, which is one step below patent leather in terms of the shine.

The big story for Romika this season is its Spikes collection, which, via a rotating panel of spikes on the sole, can switch from normal street shoes to spiked soles for use in icy conditions. Spikes styles are available for both men and women in shoe and boot styles. Romika continues to offer its machine-washable waterproof boots in a range of colours.

Comfort brand Steptronic uses a chunkier sole on some styles for autumn 12. The range offers a variety of styles across boots and shoes, most notably Chelsea boots and brogues. Several brightly coloured suede styles, including red, green and purple, have joined its core range of lace-up shoes and slip-on loafers.

With a nod towards Isabel Marant, Tamaris’s new wedge-heeled trainer comes in a selection of styles and fabrics including a leather and suede mix in three different colour combos called Cigar, Scarlet and Jungle. Another style mixes suede and glitter on the upper. Western influences have been incorporated into some of its knee-high and ankle boot styles.

In its women’s collection, Rieker uses some slightly higher heel heights for autumn 12 on both knee-high boots and ankle boots, with the usual high levels of comfort and flexibility.

Women’s boot styles come with detailing on the upper including buckles and zips. Men’s boots have become important for the brand and include brogue-style boots and Chelsea boots.

Josef Seibel

Crêpe-sole wedge boots, and Western-style boots made with lightweight Polyurethane soles are both key styles in Josef Seibel’s women’s collection for autumn 12. Hiking details are evident on a number of styles as is brogue detailing on women’s boots. In terms of fabrication, a lot of distressed-look suede is seen across the collection.

Soft air technology continues to be used in all of Mephisto’s styles to ensure comfort. The women’s boot offer has been scaled back following slow boot sales last autumn; the focus has shifted mainly to ankle boots as opposed to longer-length styles. For men, Mephisto uses waterproof technology from Gore-Tex, with hiking and brogue details both popular.

A wide-fit women’s pump style with a neoprene upper is proving one of Padders’ best-sellers for autumn 12. Leather-lined shoes with a moulded foot bed are also new. Ankle boots with detailing on the upper in brown, black and red leather are also strong. In the men’s range,  Padders has introduced a hiking-style boot with a rugged sole.
