Spring 10

Brands at the Dusseldorf show ramped up perennial styles with new design details to justify higher price points


Sperry Topsider
Sperry Topsider continued to make the most of its on-trend boat shoe heritage but new uppers such as bright tartan prints and weathered leathers moved the look on. Sorbet shades offered a softer palette. A high-profile chukka boot/boat shoe hybrid signalled where the brand is headed as it diversifies.

Swedish brand Vagabond played it reasonably safe, offering a commercial range for spring 10. Boat shoes and penny loafers were carried over from autumn 09 but new bold colourways added interest. Denim espadrille flats for women were original, while flats with chain mail details on the vamp added a feminine touch.

Snipe made a strong spring 10 debut at GDS. The brand exhibited a cleverly segmented 40-style range featuring what it hopes will become its signature shark tooth soled ‘Ripple’ shoe and a leather loafer that is machine washable at 30 degrees. The brand recommends a 2.5 markup.

Dr Martens
The iconic boot brand continued to develop its Originals range by injecting attractive and commercial new lasts into the range. A vulcanised lightweight demi lace-up boot in suede and tartan print targets premium retailers, while the Originals boot with ditzy floral patterns taps into the young fashion market.

Camel active
Camel Active served up a vast and eclectic range featuring a broad colour palette and selection of styles. Chukka and desert boot interpretations were standout styles alongside lightweight boat shoes, loafers and hybrid sport casual lace ups. Leather and suede are used together to add two-tone interest.

This Dutch brand introduced a couple of new styles, the standout being a wooden clog construction with a wedge heel in a dark colour palette. A printed foil technique on flat loafers gave a lace effect to uppers. The brand has appointed former Geox UK commercial director Nick West as its new agent for the UK.

Simple over foot strapping is key to the comfort market for spring 10 and Mephisto backed the style with aplomb. Boat shoes and loafers comprised a large part of this range while nude shades and snakeskin were key. A sweet collection of jazz shoes and soft suede slip-ons were standout styles.

Gabor exhibited the most directional collection in the mainstream brand’s recent history.
It hopes its 7% rise in prices for spring 10 – due to currency fluctuations – will be offset by ramped up styling and attention to detail.
Slate grey suede fringing on courts and quilted neon tech-fabric on sandals stood out.

While still pushing its Spirit of Nature brand, Josef Seibel introduced a range of clean line, mid-profile trainers and lace-up pumps into the range for spring10. Patent three-strap sandals and T-bar demi wedges added an element of formality to this otherwise casual collection.

Piùdi Servas
The spring 10 Piùdi Servas range packed an ambitious punch as the brand set out its stall after its relaunch last season. Directional, bright snakeskin platforms and wedges underpinned the range while the commercial side of the collection features ballet pumps and mid heel-height court shoes.

Rieker offered buyers the most season appropriate spring 10 range in the sector, with a clear focus on sandals. Red and brown were key shades as were diamanté and floral motif details on the vamps. Studded strapping added a new twist to the range, which also comprised styles carried over from last spring.

German brand Ara has taken on feedback from its employees in the UK market and introduced more colour to the collection for spring 10 and a new almond toe shape last. On the back of
this and a handful of new accounts, spring 10 forward orders are up 31% on last year.
