Comfort footwear specialists blended technology with trend-led options at the Düsseldorf show.

Josef Seibel

An investment of ¤1.4m into its Hungarian factory this year shows Josef Seibel’s commitment to manufacture about 85% of its product in Europe. For women, the brand has expanded its range of wedges to include peep-toe styles and a wider variety of strappy options, while for men it has introduced brogues with cream soles.

The spring 12 collection from Tamaris is a stark contrast to spring 11, as it moves away from nude tones towards the trend for colour and colour blocking with red, orange, green and blue standing out. Flats and ballerina pumps continue to be a focus but the brand has introduced a rubber EVA wedge shape that is used on various styles including slingbacks.

Geox continues to use its waterproof Amphibiox technology, which it introduced in autumn 11, across men’s and women’s styles including trainers. As part of its sponsorship of the Red Bull Formula One team and driver Sebastian Vettel, the brand has created an F1 version of its men’s Snake trainer carrying Red Bull and F1 branding.

Compared with traditional comfort brands, the heel heights by Brazilian women’s footwear brand Piccadilly are high on many styles but extra cushioning has been added to support the ball of the foot. Other styles include wedges, sandals and espadrilles, in fabrics such as faux snakeskin, suede and patent leather. Cobalt blue, red, silver and gold dominate the palette.

The men’s offer catches the eye at Mephisto for spring 12. Aiming to cash in on the loafer trend, Mephisto serves up an unstructured version, designed to give extra comfort, in a variety of fabrics (suede, leather and perforated leather) and colours including brown, black and grey. Elsewhere, a trainer-style shoe in a leather finish stands out.

For spring 12 Romika has introduced a PU sole to its wedges to create a cork effect, making the style more trend-led but keeping it lightweight. Elsewhere, the brand has added new detail to the uppers of its traditional flat styles, including fringing and tassels. Bright colours are evident throughout, with red, green and blue particularly prominent.

Palladium is taking on brands like Converse with its Blanc canvas style, which comes in a shoe or boot, has a thick rubber sole and heavy canvas upper and is available in a variety of colours including navy, white, red, light blue and beige. A distressed-look wash has been added to the canvas upper on some styles.

Now in its 26th year showing at GDS, Clarks became the first brand to have its own dedicated catwalk show this season. For spring 12 it has teamed up with department store Liberty to use classic Liberty prints on wedges and in the linings of court shoes. Clarks backs the colour blocking trend with gusto, particularly on more trend-led, strappy summer day shoes.

Centre stage among Rieker’s spring 12 men’s collection is a nautical-inspired deck shoe style with a rubber sole. For women, Rieker has upped the number of dressier, lower-heeled styles based on their popularity in spring 11. Leather cut-out designs also continue to be important for spring 12 among women’s styles.

The 45-plus consumer continues to be targeted by Gabor for spring 12 but there is evidence of some trend-led styles coming through. Some of the wedge styles are slightly higher than is typical of Gabor’s core product and colour is stronger than in previous seasons, with a palette of primary colours. Embellishment is also key on the uppers in some wedge and sandal styles.

After agreeing a deal to be distributed in the UK by Josef Seibel for spring 12, Marc is planning to up its stockist base among multiples while maintaining its present indie customers. As a result it has expanded its range for spring 12, with new styles including suede pumps with fringe detail on the upper, almond-toe pumps, kitten heels and peep toes in bright colours.

Anatomic & Co

New developments in Anatomic & Co’s men’s offer for spring 12 include the introduction of extra-cushioning bubble technology built into the sole of a smart leather trainer-style shoe. Other men’s styles include sandals and moccasins, which feature technology that injects PU into rubber soles for added comfort.
