Trade was steady for exhibitors at Italian footwear fair Micam.
Despite a rather slow start on the opening Sunday of Milanese footwear show Micam - a day traditionally attended by Italian independent retailers - trade was steady for UK exhibitors, with quality buyers from Japan, Korea, the US, France and Belgium writing orders.
Julian Hakes, owner of the eponymous women’s footwear brand, said Micam, which took place at exhibition centre Fiero Milano from March 2-5, was an essential event on the show calendar: “Footfall may be down on last season but the show is still the most important European trade fair for us. It’s a great order-writing show and I’ve seen clients come from as far afield as America and Japan this season.”
In men’s footwear, Goodyear-welted brogues continued to dominate both British and Italian labels with the likes of Loake, Northern Cobbler and Franceschetti all enjoying buoyant trade. Ponyskins, pointed toes and chunky heels were seen across women’s collections, with British brands French Sole, Kat Maconie and Cleo B all displaying these trends.
The sportswear craze continued for autumn 14 with many brands offering their own take on trainers, including Ted Baker, which launched its first sports footwear line this season. Slip-on loafers in a variety of prints, colours and textures also proved a hit with buyers.
Women’s brand Peponita, a London-based co-operative of designers, has launched for autumn 14 with a 20-piece range of vintage-inspired shoes and boots, with a heel height of 6cm or less. The ‘office to bar’ collection features ponyskin, embossed suede and neon detailing on Mary Janes, ankle boots and embellished pumps. Popular colours include cobalt blue and silver. This Italian unisex brand has refocused its direction, concentrating on three core styles in a variety of prints and colours. Moving away from its usual biker boot styles, the 50-piece collection is dominated by ponyskin desert boots and slip-on loafers. Some best-selling spring styles have been adapted by Moda in Pelle to freshen up its autumn collection. Black ankle boots have been revamped with ruched panelling on the leather uppers; ponyskin and faux-snakeskin pumps have been mixed with patent finishes, while metallic heels give court shoes a new twist. Exhibiting for the first time at Micam, women’s brand Cleo B has focused on wearability by introducing a new flat day boot and lower block heels for autumn 14. The colourful British label, which carries styles in its signature orange, purple, black and blue colourways, has also added an ankle boot with a detachable extension, giving customers the option of wearing it as a knee-length style.
