Heritage-inspired outerwear with utility detailing is high on River Island’s agenda for autumn 11. Outerwear uses waxed cotton, often woven in the UK, in woodland greens, browns and rust reds, many with patches of contrast fabric. Mixed with details like concealed hoods and duffle buttons, outerwear nods to fisherman’s attire, as do chunky, textured knits.
The autumn palette is accented by shades of yellow and, in the Sports Deluxe line, winter whites. Fabrics are often mixed, bringing modernity to the heritage story and creating a panelling direction. Suedette and flannel are combined with fine-gauge knits and waxed coats as side panels and elbow and shoulder patches.
- Rust waxed jacket, £99.99

- Checked jacket with shearling lining, £69.99
- Rust trousers with cargo-inspired patch pockets, £tbc
Right for the market?
By combining accessible heritage styles with detailing, River Island transforms nice-to-have purchases into must-haves. British-made fabric and detailing help justify price rises. Its outerwear will do well if demand for coats and jackets seen in recent autumn seasons continues. The Sports Deluxe range targets the urban streetwear market, although the Lurex shaved fur trim on some pieces may be too over the top.
