Seasons Preview: John Charles

Regine Ellis, Creative director

Design We’ve taken inspiration from the current trends this season and adapted them to cater for the John Charles customer. Our retailers are demanding even more individuality from a collection along with modern occasionwear. This season has seen further creativity in its experimentation of handcrafted detailing, luxury fabrics and feminine silhouettes. Lace is key this season, carefully placed on knee-length dresses and used also as a delicate overlay, on jackets or ruched with a belt to create a floaty peplum. Jackets have also been expanded to offer a range of solutions for our customers such as boleros with a new sharper cut, co-ordinated embellishments and elegant lace jackets.

Colours Metallics - seen predominately on fine lace and luxury tweed. Pastels - used beautifully on abstract watercolour and floral cotton prints. Colour blocking - positioned carefully to create an on-trend, glamorous silhouette.

Fabrics We’ve used a range of light fabrics perfect for the season from soft, floaty chiffon and lace along with smooth satin. These are mixed with luxurious tweeds, rich jacquards and embossed twill. Eye-catching sequins also feature on dainty metallic tulle and lace. The eveningwear is kept elegant by using a range of figure-hugging jerseys and fine lace.

Silhouettes Pencil shapes for a streamlined, elegant shape that creates a classic 1950s silhouette. A-line in a distinctively fun, new knee-length style adds an original element to the collection. Peplum is a chic shape that offers a flattering yet glamorous look, especially when teamed with a vibrant print. Finally, see-through detailing such as a sensual cut-out back detail in lace or sheer tulle creating a dramatic effect.

Prices We’ve worked very hard to keep our prices down.

Anything else to add? John Charles is very excited to announce that it has now created its own franchise store in Shanghai, China along with sister brands Ellis Bridals and Kelsey Rose. The venture has proved very successful so far with the local market really taking to our classically British, heritage style. We are also rapidly expanding internationally throughout Europe and now the US. We’ve also put even more emphasis on to our marketing, making sure that our brand awareness is high with our campaigns advertised nationally and our styles featured on a range of high-profile figures.
