Balmain paved the way for supersized shoulders with its jewelled encrusted zebra print jackets last autumn, and the trend has been increasing in pace ever since. While the 1980s provided the reference point for spring 09 with Dynasty-esque shoulder pads storming through, this season designers experimented with origami folds, peaked shapes and ruched, ruffled fabrics to emphasise shoulder size. It remains to be seen whether the volumes of fabric and attention to detail required in producing these shapes will prove too difficult for the high street to emulate inexpensively.
